Surviving Your Day Job...You have your heart set on a new lifestyle. One that fits you. You've committed to it. There's just one problem… you have a job. You can’t just throw in the towel and tell your boss you’re leaving…not if you like to eat. But you’ve got this purpose burning deep inside. So what do you do? How can you hang on to get from where you are to where you need to go? Let’s explore…
While there are times when it’s necessary to cut the ties and go for broke, this article won’t address them. Instead, let’s look at things you can do right now that will make the present more bearable while you’re dreaming of the future. This can help:
- Learn all you can. However unpleasant your current job may be, it offers many opportunities to gather information. This on-their-job training will be valuable and necessary when you take to the air on your own. Each meeting has dynamics that are useful. If nothing else, you’ll learn how you should NOT run a business. Take those things to heart…literally.
- Remember: It’s only temporary. It’s true. The day will come when you’ll be able to bid your employer farewell and launch your dream. When you feel like you can’t survive another moment, tell yourself, “this too shall pass”. The difference will be that when it does pass, you’ll be closer to living your dream.
- There’s no place like home! Dorothy was right! When you’re in the middle of the workday and you feel that horrible feeling bubbling up within you, go home. Perhaps you can’t pack your briefcase and head for the condo, but you can steal away for a few minutes. Even if you have to go to the throne room, aka the toilet, close your eyes and imagine you’re living your dream. See yourself making it happen. Experience the success that is yet to come. Enjoy and revel in the moment. Take a deep breath and know you’re almost there. Doesn’t home feel nice?
Trying to juggle two jobs is not easy. I’ve done it. You’re most likely doing it now. The drudgery of your current, yet unfulfilling lot in life zaps you of what energy you have. Discouragement seeps in.
By constantly reminding yourself of what you’re working toward throughout the workday for the other guy, you’ll feel more energy, more excitement and just enough coping ability to survive your day job while learning to fly in your dream job! Hang it there! You’ll be airborne before you know it!
